The Dip

"Hailing from Seattle, The Dip is an electrifying seven-piece ensemble that melds vintage rhythm and blues and modern pop with "impeccably crafted, 60's-steeped soul" (KEXP). The group quickly gained notoriety for their eminently danceable live shows that feature the powerful vocals of Tom Eddy (Beat Connection), bolstered by the deep pocket of their unmistakably detailed rhythm section, and the spirited melodies of “The Honeynut Horns”. Hard-hitting but sensitive, Whether young or old, you can’t help yourself from grinning ear-to-ear when you see these gentlemen hit the stage. I wouldn’t hold back dancing for that matter either! Ladies and gentleman, give it up for The Dip! Hit up the dance floor, and put it in your hip!"

Formed in 2015, the Seattle trio - guitarist/vocalist Grant Mullen, bassist/vocalist Gianni Aiello and drummer Henry LaVallee - put out debut EP R.I.P. the following year and have been steadily building up their reputation as a live act in the meantime, and having as much fun as possible while doing it. Because as much as the three-piece - who are all in their very early 20s now - have their heads screwed on and are fiercely intelligent people, they also want to let loose and enjoy being in a band. After all, that's kind of what being in a band with your closest friends is all about.

BEN UNION

8:30pm on Sept I

West End Stage

"Ben Union is the living, breathing definition of a modern classic. The Seattle/Tacoma-based sensation is a rare breed of artist, pushing the edges of his music closer to the luminous polish of current hits only to reveal timeless influences and instincts. His art is a stiff cocktail of tried and true ingredients shaken with a mixer sweet enough to keep you consuming it for the rest of your life.

Union is a deliberate songwriter, his sonic libation adhering to the highest standards of a reckless night. His lyrics don’t sleep and his rhythms are driving stolen wheels on a suspended license downhill toward a cliff. There are unmistakable flavors of R&B and soul, hints of reggae and funk, and a splash of low-end beats poured over a light serving of rock for refreshment. At the end of the night, you don’t care what’s in it; You know it tastes good and does its job every time. Ben is that time you drank all that champagne and rum punch and never got the hangover you most certainly deserved.

Freddy and Francine

2:00pm on Sept 2

West End Stage

Authenticity in the music industry is slippery when wet.  Everyone praises its value, yet when an artistic is truly authentic, it is often only embraced if it can be easily walked on without slipping and landing in a pile of genre-related questions.  To the casual observer, Freddy and Francine seem safely cemented as a folk duo.  They got the look.  The soulful harmonies.  The folk circuit bookings-over 150 a year, including the legendary Telluride Bluegrass Festival. They're even getting married.  Cute.  Even their acts name is cute. You could make a movie about it.  Somebody probably has.  But Freddy and Francine (they actual names are Lee Ferris and Bianca Caruso) aren't interested in acting, or genres, or talking or not talking about their relationship.  They've done all that.  They've even recently left their longtime home of Los Angeles for Nashville.  And they've never looked more like themselves.  "We just want to play music all the time and we don't care about the rest of the bullshit."
